Bukhara is agitated with rumors about murders and mass arrests

In the first days of February Ferghana.Ru office received few messages about the outbreak of criminal events in Uzbekistan. Unfortunately, we are not able to confirm or reject the majority of them. First of all, the official authorities of Uzbekistan ignore our questions. Secondly, being concerned about their own security, the witnesses (if any) are not always willing to testify.

According to Ferghana.Rusources in the law enforcement bodies, several arm blanche attacks took place in Bukhara during January 2-30, 2010. The targets were taxi drivers, four of which were killed.

Presumably, two young men died because of overdosing of drugs under suspicious circumstances; one of them was the son of Prosecutor Makhmudov, the employee of Public Prosecution Office of Uzbekistan.

The most scandalous event was the murder of A. Akromov, the manager of Oblast cotton industry, in his own house. The suspected murderers were arrested two days later.

Following these tragic events, there have been mass arrests in Bukhara; the targets were mainly people, having criminal record (drug addicts and mafia bosses). Overall, the police detained about 15 people. Among the arrested persons there are Muslims that, according to the source, were utterly surprised by their detention because, they say, they have no affiliation with criminal groups and mass murders in particular.

The National Security Service Bukhara department officers detained K. Kodirov that is suspected in connection with religious communities in Iran. In their turn, other sources of Ferghana.Rureport mass arrests among believers in Bukhara. Allegedly, on January 29-30 the security officers detained about 40 Muslim believers of various age. According to the source, all of them are suspected in the organization of mass murders.

The source also indicates that there is unofficial curfew in Bukhara: the residents are not recommended walking in the evening while some night clubs and entertainment places close at 11pm.

In concern with mentioned events the night life of the city became less active. People prefer to stay home since law enforcement officers are legally authorized to check "every suspicious person". "This is new excuse for blackmailing" the Ferghana.Rusources note.

Moreover, the authorities do not allow underage teenagers enter the mosques. During Friday prayer, the policemen collect the information about underage visitors.

According to rumors, the murder of cotton industry manager could be organized by Samoidin Khuseinov, the Head of Oblast, that could treat the victim as potential competitor. Common people say that the strange murder of Prosecutor’s son could be also ordered by Oblast administration.

Official mass media of Uzbekistan keep silence. As usual, the absence of information produces rumors.
